If I could write a letter to (18 yr old) me...
Dear Murphy,
Hi, it's me. Well, actually it's you; 9 years down the road. I have some things I'd like to say to you, so listen up.
First of all, be nicer to your mother. She loves you and just wants the best for you. No, she is not perfect, but neither are you. Stop thinking you know everything and listen to her once in a while. She actually does know what she's talking about. You give her ulcers and turn her hair grey yet she still continues to love you, so cut her some slack.
Second, that boy is not worth it. I know you think he's the love of your life, and that's okay for now, but know he's not worth it. You do not deserve to be yelled at and lied to. You can not save him - just back away slowly. You deserve so much better; and don't worry, one day you will find the man who treats you like you deserve to be treated. But you're not patient and you're way too forgiving, so it's going to take a lot of heartbreak before you get there.
Next up; I realize you don't like school, but would it kill you to try?! You are so incredibly smart, but you know you actually have to do the work, right? Life would be so much easier if you just put in 1/2 the amount of effort that you're capable of. When you get to college there's not going to be anyone there grounding you if you don't do you're homework, you're just going to fail. So shape up or ship out. (spoiler alert - you don't shape up until MUCH later in life)
Life is not easy, but you make it much harder than it needs to be. You will continue to do this for many years, so buckle up. But don't worry, the day will come when you find your inner peace and happiness and realize the beauty that surrounds you.
Love,
27 year old Murphy
